Design from fpm opens the door into the digital writing world for Schwan Stabilo

Munich, January 2012

STABILO SMARtball

Excellent design starts with attentive observation. For example, the number of people constantly switching between writing or drawing on paper and touchscreen (e.g. an iPad) has been skyrocketing for some time now.

The Munich based design agency fpm has now created an ideal writing device for these very people: the new STABILO SMARTball. It is a pen on the one hand and a conductible stylus for capacitive touchscreens on the other. Ergonomically shaped, aesthetic and unbeatably practical. The design has already won the IF Product Design Award 2012.

Strategically speaking, Stabilo is entering uncovered ground with this product innovation. The SMARTball epitomises the long-established manufacturer's first step into the digital world. At the same time, the new pen organically fits into Schwan Stabilo's business model, into existing processes and the established positioning of the brand.

Behind this is fpm's claim to use design as a central component for a successful competitive strategy. With the "Stabilo InnovationLab", fpm already created a central forum for the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas, product innovation and brand development at Stabilo ten years ago.

The SMARTball offers users a high quality design with a high practical value. Thanks to the new pen, they can now easily change from paper to screen and back. As they no longer have to use their fingers, they can also hygienically work with touchscreens which are used by several people. The ergonomic design with anti-slip grip zones also means that the pen always sits perfectly in their hand.
